Alan Hunter became part of American pop culture during his years as one of the original MTV VJs. He's also been the radio voice for Verizon Wireless, and appears on the Sirius Satellite Radio Network as one of the hosts for the "Big 80's" channel. He was the host for the Starz Channel's original series "Looking For Stars", and has hosted Encore's annual "Big 80's Movie Weekend" since 2004. He formed Hunter Films in 1995 and in 2003, the company received an Academy Award nomination for co-producing the short film Johnny Flynton. Hunter Films also executive-produced the feature film Dreamland, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006. Hunter is co-owner of the entertainment complex WorkPlay in downtown Birmingham, and the co-founder and president of the board of the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. Sidewalk named by Movie Maker Magazine as the "Best Kept Secret" among US independent film festivals, and in 2006 was named one of Time Magazine's Top Ten "Festivals for the Rest of Us". Locally, Hunter sits on the board of AIDS Alabama and the Alabama School of Fine Arts, and he co-founded the civic action group Catalyst to bring about positive change in the city of Birmingham, Alabama.
